Quotable Quotes

HAWMC Day #2: Quotation Inspiration. Find a quote that inspires you (either positively or negatively) and free write about it for 15 minutes.

“Work like you don’t need the money, dance like no one is watching and love like you’ve never been hurt.”

I am unable to find who actually authored this quote.  Some say that it was written by Mark Twain but I personally think it’s not sarcastic enough for him to have written it.  Another attribution pins it to William Purkey.  I don’t care who wrote it; I’ve always loved it.

“Work like you don’t need the money.” What better advice is there than that?  Too many times we get caught up in the money part of the equation and forget the better reason that we’re working.  Ok, yes, we all work to make money so we can live, but if we’re lucky we can enjoy the work and the people around us.  That is what we should focus on, right? (I personally hate money.  I think it’s evil.)

“dance like no one is watching” this is probably my favorite part of the quote.  Who the heck cares if you dance like an epileptic ragdoll?  Dancing is supposed to be fun!!  If you spend all your dance time worrying what other people are thinking then you just don’t get the point, right?  The only time I haven’t enjoyed dancing was at my sons’ weddings when it was the mother/son dance and everyone was watching US.  It kinda felt like I was in a fishbowl and that was uncomfortable but getting a chance to dance with my sons was worth it.

“love like you’ve never been hurt.” Every love affair deserves your all; your complete attention.  If you’re focusing on past hurts, then you aren’t giving your current partner the attention they deserve.  Love what’s right in front of you and give your all!  Take that leap and trust this person to love you back in a way that makes you feel special!

“Work like you don’t need the money, dance like no one is watching and love like you’ve never been hurt.”  Now, thinking about this quote in relation to my diabetes, here is what I come up with.

“Test like you don’t need the money.”  All people with diabetes need to test their bg.  If we don’t test, then we don’t have the ammunition to fight our condition.  If we don’t test because we’re worried about the cost, then we’re doing ourselves harm.  (Something needs to be done about the cost of this disease.  Help needs to be available for PWD (people with diabetes) who don’t have insurance.)

“live like no one is watching” We, as PWD, need to live our lives without worrying what other people think about our condition.  If you need to test and inject in public, then do it!  Do it as discreetly as you can, but don’t worry what other people around you are thinking! Eat however you feel comfortable eating and don’t worry about the food police.  You, and only you, are responsible for the food and drink you put in your mouth.  You know if you can eat that or not.  Don’t let others guilt you into anything; we excel at our own guilt, thank you very much.

“Love your life with D even though it sometimes hurts” Yes, having diabetes hurts.  The injections can hurt.  I hear that pumps and CGM insertions can be painful.  Pricking our fingers multiple times a day can wear on you.  Denying ourselves a particular food we love because it causes glucose spikes bears its own type of pain.  It hurts….but dammit, we’re worth it!  Don’t let the diabetes turkey get you down!  Love your life and all that it entails.  Love yourself.  Care enough about yourself to do the painful things so you can live a long and healthier life.

“Test like you don’t need the money, live like no one is watching and love your life with D even though it sometimes hurts.”

I’m participating in Wego Health’s Health Activist Writer’s Month Challenge.  Posting every day in April.  #HAWMC

  1. This is fantastic - I love how your reworked the quote to speak directly to diabetes. Great job, and I'll adopt this as my new mantra!!

I truly love to receive comments from readers, however, if your comment includes a link to a website about diabetes or information on how you "cured" your diabetes, it won't be published. If your profile name links to a website about diabetes, it won't be published. If you also write a blog and would like me to include it in my blog roll, please say so in a comment and I'll do that. Thanks.
